Muscle Tissue (types) Flashcards
What are the 3 types of muscle
Smooth, cardiac, and skeletal muscle
What is smooth muscle?
-involuntary muscles
-all internal organs of the body
-acts like slow escalator
What is cardiac muscle
-the heart muscle
-has the ability to contract quickly for long periods of time
What is Skeletal Muscle?
-under voluntary control
-striations that move closer to each other as the muscle contracts
-supplies quick powerful contraction but gets tired after long periods of time (lactic acid)
What connects to skeletal muscle?
-attached to bone by tendons to form a musculotenenous unit
4 basic properties of musculotendinous unit
Extensibility: ability to be stretched
Elasticity: ability to return to normal length
Irritability: ability to respond to stimulus
Contractility: ability to contract
What is an Agonist?
Responsible for the primary joint motion
What is the Antagonist?
Acts against the agonist to return the joint to an extended position (opposite)
What is the synergist?
Allows primary movement of the joint by helping the agonist
What is the fixator?
Fixates the origin from moving
Ex. Lats in bicep curls
3 types of muscle contraction
Concentric, eccentric, and isometric
What is a concentric contraction?
The muscle length decreases (raising)
What is a eccentric contraction?
Muscle length increases (lowering)
What is a isometric contraction?
Muscle length doesn’t change (holding)
Which directions can contractions happen in?
Muscle contractions only take place in the direction of muscle fibres
