Muscle tissue Flashcards
Describe muscle tissue
Highly cellular, well vascularised (great blood supply for lots of work) and responsible for most body movement.
What are the three types of muscle tissue
Skeletal, Cardiac and Smooth
Describe skeletal muscle
Muscles attached to the bones of the skeleton. Each muscle has more than one nuclei sitting on the outer edge. Striated muscle (has linear marks) or a banded appearance which comes from micro structures. Mostly under voluntary control but involuntary movements can occur (e.g twitching).
Describe cardiac muscle
Only found in the walls of the heart. Striated muscle with intercalated disks (in the branched areas that join the muscle cell). Intercalated disks responsible for making sure each of the cardiac muscle cells contract or move in a coordinated fashion (at the same time). Have lots of mitochondria which produce lots of ATP. Under involuntary control.
Describe smooth muscle
Found mainly in the walls of hollow organs (stomach, bladder, uterus or blood vessels). No striations and one single nucleus per muscle cell. Ends are tapered (become narrow). Under involuntary control.
