Describe the anatomical position
An erect person whose face is directed forward, arms hanging by sides, palms of hand facing forward.
Describe Supine and Prone
Supine: Person lying face up. Palm facing up. Lying on back.
Prone: Person lying face down. Palm facing down. Lying on stomach.
Describe superior and inferior
Superior: Towards the head
Inferior: Towards the tail
Describe anterior and posterior
Anterior: Toward the front
Posterior: Toward the back
Describe proximal and distal
Proximal: Nearest to the point of attachment
Distal: Distant from the point of attachment.
For limbs only.
Describe medial and lateral
Medial: Toward the midline of the body
Lateral: Away from the midline of the body
Describe superficial and deep
Superficial: Close to the surface
Deep: Towards the interior.
What are the four planes?
Sagittal, Frontal, Transverse, Oblique
Describe the sagittal and frontal planes
Sagittal: Median= Mid sagittal. Runs vertically down the body separating left and right.
Frontal: Coronal plane. Runs vertically from right to left. Front and back.
Describe the Transverse and Oblique
Transverse: Runs parallel to the ground and divides the body into superior and inferior.
Oblique: Runs at an angle. Less commonly used.
What are the three different cavities
The thoracic cavity, Abdominal cavity and Pelvic cavity. Can sometimes be abdominopelvic cavity
Name the four quadrants from left to right
Right upper quadrant. Left upper Quadrant. Right lower quadrant. Left Lower Quadrant.
Name the nine regions from left to right
Right hypochondriac. Epigastric. Left Hypochondriac. Right lumber. Umbilical. Left Lumber. Right iliac. Hypogastric. Left iliac.
