Muscle tissue Flashcards
fascia function
surrounds groups of muscle
- attaches and stabilises muscle
- prevent overextension
- transmit tension
muscle connective tissue layers
epimysium = top layer of connective tissue
perimysium = surrounds fascicle
endomysium = surrounds individual muscle fibres
fascicle
bundles of muscle fibres
hierarchy of muscle units
sarcomere
myofibril
muscle fibre
fasicle
muscle
myopathy
abnormal conditions/diseases of muscle tissue
dystrophy
muscle destroying disease
neuromuscular disorders
conditions affecting the motor unit
metabolic myopathies
defects in any stage of muscle ATP metabolism
inflammatory myopathies
chronic muscle inflammation and weakness
light band filaments
actin filaments
thin filaments
dark band filaments
myosin filaments
thick filaments
H zone
lighter region within the A band
- characterised by an absence of actin, containing only myosin
M line
fine dark line in the centre of the sarcomere
- anchors myosin filaments together
A band
dark band of the sarcomere
- contains entire length of myosin filament and overlapping portion of actin filaments
sarcomere
basic contractile unit of muscle
- composed of actin and myosin filaments
Z disk
anchor for actin filaments along the sarcomere border, joining sarcomere units
I band
light coloured band in the sacromere
- contains only actin filaments
- bisected by the z disk
