Muscle Tissue Flashcards
1
Q
What is Muscle Tissue?
A
- composed of cells
- specialised to contract to produce voluntary and involuntary movement of body parts
-basic body tissue - muscle cells/ fibres/ myocytes are long and narrow
2
Q
What are the functions of Muscle Tissue?
A
- responsible for movement
- maintain posture
- stabalize joints
- thermogenesis
- transforms chemical energy into mechanical energy producing force
- increase muuscle mass = increase immune system
3
Q
What are the types of Muscle tissue?
A
- Skeletal Muscle
- Smooth Muscle
- Cardiac Muscle
4
Q
What is Skeletal Muscle and what is its function?
A
- muscles that are attached to the bone/ skeleton by tendons- muscle of the limbs and body wall
- allow you to perform a wide range of movements and functions
- stratated and under voluntary control
- most common and abundant of the 3 types of muscles
5
Q
What are the Characteristics of Skeletal Muscle?
A
- Microscopic (long, cylindrical muscle fibres/ cells that exhibit cross striations, multinucleated on the periferal of cells, and unbranched)
- Location (attached by tendons to bones)
- Nervous Control (voluntary- somatic nerves- SNS)
- Speed of Contraction (Fast- Responds quickliy to stimuli)
- Size (Very Large- 10-100 microns diameter, upt to 35cm length)
- Connective Tissue Compartments (endomysium, perimysium and epimysium)
6
Q
What are the parts of the Muscle?
A
