Muscle System Flashcards
Characteristics of muscle tissue
Contractibility, extensibility, elasticity, excitability
Functions of the muscular system
Movement, thermogenesis, posture support, organ volume, protects organs
Types of muscle tissue
Smooth, cardiac, skeletal
Connective tissue covering that seperate a muscles, and becomes the tendon
Fascia
Connective tissue under the fascia, goad all around a skeletal muscle
Epimysium
Connective tissue that extends inward from epimysium and surrounds fasciculi
Perimysium
Connective tissue that surrounds each muscle fiber
Endomysium
Compartments of bundles of muscle fibers
Fasciculi
Muscle cell
Muscle fiber
Contractile fibers within the muscle fiber
Myofibrils
Thick myofilaments, overlaps free ends of actin, shaped like a golf club
Myosin
Thin myofilaments, anchored to Z lines, two stranded protein intertwined
Actin
Unit containing myosin and actin within a myofibril
Sarcomere
Nerve that carries message from the brain- stimulates muscles
Motor neuron
End of axon terminal where it attaches to muscle fiber
Neuromuscular junction
Location on the muscle fiber at end of axon terminal
Motor end plate
Released from nerve, activates muscle to move
Acetylcholine (neurotransmitter)
Has most mass, more proximal, no movement
Origin
More distal, movable
Insertion
Muscle responsible for majority of force
Agonists
