MUSCLE STRUCTURE Flashcards
What is a striated muscle?
Cardiac and skeletal muscle - they have an arrangement with repeating bands and have contractile filaments. They convert chemical energy to physical work
What are non striated muscles?
Smooth muscle - they don’t have repeating bands they instead have myofilaments and sarcomeres. Myofibrils make myocytes
What are myogenic muscles ?
The muscle cells produce the electrical excitability needed for the muscle to contract
What are neurogenic muscles?
The electrical information needed is from stimulation from nerves which result in depolarisation of the motor end plate which results in an EPP and then an AP.
Which nervous system are cardiac and smooth muscle supplied by?
Autonomic nervous system
Which nervous system are skeletal muscle supplied by?
Somatic nervous system
What filaments are sarcomeres made from and how do they contract?
Thick myosin filaments and thin actin filaments. Actin slides over myosin when contracting
What are satellite cells?
Muscle stem cells
What are light bands?
Actin only
What are dark bands?
Actin and myosin filaments
