BRAIN ANATOMY Flashcards
FRONTAL LOBE function and landmarks
This lobe is responsible for motor information - it plans and commands voluntary movements
It main landmarks include:
* The Central sulcus which separates the frontal lobe from the parietal lobe
* The sylvian fissure/ lateral sulcus which separates the frontal lobe from the temporal lobe
* The precentral gyrus which is responsible for the voluntary motor movements
PARIETAL LOBE
Responsible for somatosensory information which is sensory and environmental info. Has the somatosensory cortex. The central sulcus separates the parietal lobe from the frontal lobe
OCCIPITAL LOBE
This lobe receives visual information and contains the visual cortexes. There is a right and left visual cortex. The right visual cortex is connected to the left visual field
TEMPORAL LOBE
Responsible for auditory information
LIMBIC LOBE
This is responsible for emotional processing and memory. It contains the cingulate gyrus and the hippocampus
INSULAR LOBE
Sensory processing, decision making. It is located deep within the lateral sulcus
HYPOTHALAMUS
This releases hormones which stimulate the release of hormones in the anterior pituitary. Regulates homeostasis and the ANS. It is below the thalamus
THALAMUS
Located above the hypothalamus. It is the main relay centre of the brain. Its nuclei controls sensory and motor outputs of the brain
SUBTHALAMUS
Involved with integration of somatic motor function. Between thalamus and midbrain
EPITHALAMUS
Connects limbic system to rest of the brain. Located by the pineal gland
