What are some patient factors in muscle strains/sprains that warrant referral to an MD?
Under 2 for OTC agent, under 12 for Rx
Pregnancy
CV disease or risk factors
GI disorders or risk factors
Renal impairment
Asthma
Bleeding disorder or on anti platelet or anticoagulant
What are some red flags in muscle strains/sprains?
Visible joint changes, abnormal movement, mobility limitations
Pelvic or abdominal pain
Systemic symptoms
Pain present for 2 weeks (7 days with treatment)
Severe Pain
Increased intensity or change in character of pain
Significant trauma
What are some characteristic symptoms associated with muscle strains/sprains?
Pain (mild to moderate)
Swelling (with or without bruising)
Are the above symptoms due to overexertion or muscle, or ligament injury
What are some therapeutic options for muscle strains/sprains?
Non-pharmacological (Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation)
OTC analgesics x 7 days
Rx strength NSAIDs x 7 days
