MUSCLE: PROPERTIES + CHARACTERISITICS + FUNCTIONS Flashcards
1
Q
What are the three types of muscle tissue?
A
- Skeletal
- Cardiac
- Smooth
2
Q
What are the four basic tissue types?
A
- Excitability
- Contractility
- Extensibility
- Elasticity
3
Q
What is excitability?
A
Ability to respond to stimulation
4
Q
What is contractility?
A
Ability to shorten and pull
5
Q
What is extensibility?
A
Ability to contract over different lengths
6
Q
What is elasticity?
A
Ability to regain original length
7
Q
What are the four characterisitics of skeletal muscle?
A
- Skeletal muscles are somatic structures (under voluntary control)
- Skeletal muscles are innervated by spinal nerves (originating from the spinal cord) or cranial nerves (originating from the brainstem)
- Skeletal muscles are contractile organs that attach directly or indirectly onto bones
- Their contraction produces motion of the body
8
Q
What are the five major functions of skeletal muscle?
A
- Produce movement at various joints of the skeleton (via tendons or muscle fibres attaching onto bones)
- Maintain posture and body position (even at rest, skeletal muscles contract to stabilize joints of the body)
- Support soft tissues (abdominal wall and pelvic floor muscles support viscera)
- Regulate orifices (sphincters regulate ingestion, defecation, urination, etc.)
- Maintain body temperature (skeletal muscle contraction generate heat)
9
Q
Arrange the following from the largest to the smallest: myofibril; filament; fibre; fascicle
A
Fascicle, fibre, myofibril, filament
