Muscle/movement Impairment Terminology Flashcards
Akinesia
Inability to initiate movement ie
Commonly seen in PD
Asthenia
Generalized weakness
Secondary to cerebellar patho
Ataxia
Inability to perform coordinated movements
Athetosis
Involuntary movements with unstable posture
Peripheral movements without central stabilization
Bradykinesia
Slow movement
Chorea
Sudden random involuntary movements
Clasp-knife response
Resistance seen during range of motion of hypertonic joint where the greatest resistance occurs at the beginning that lessens further through the ROM
Clonus
Characteristic of UMN lesion
Involuntary alternating spasmodic contraction of a muscle due to a quick stretch reflex
Cogwheel rigidity
Resistance to movement that has a physic quality
Often seen in PD
Dysdiadochokinesia
Inability to perform rapidly alternating movements
Dysmetria
Inability to control range of movement and force of muscular activity
Dystonia
Related to athetosis
Larger axial muscle involvement
Fasciculations
Muscle twitch cause by random discharge or LMN and muscle fibers
Hemiballism
Involuntary violet movement of large body part
Kinesthesia
Inability to perceive direction and extent of movement of body part
