Muscle Imbalance and Exercise Flashcards

1
Q

What is muscle imbalance?

A

gross asym in muscle size –> impact in function of MSK system

Q

When does muscle imbalance become pathologic?

A

when it becomes painful

pain comes with loss of ability to stabilize

movements/maintaing postures become uncontrolled/unstable –> pain and injury

Q

What are the two components of neuromusculoskeletal system?

A

neuro component

MSK component

both offer stability

Q

What pathway maintains stability?

A

motor control pathway

movement: input from peripheral structures –> processes in CNS –> CNS creates motor output –> MSK stability while executing the movement

Q

How do we develop motor patterns?

A

motor control pathways repeat –> CNS doesn’t have to reprocess every time

Q

What are the two types of muscles?

A

Postural - movement, change in posture

Q

When does instability occur?

A

issues with motor pattern (neuro)

issues with muscle’s capacity to execute the motor pattern (MSK)

=> muscle imbalance

Q

What is a facilitated muscle? inhibited?

A

facilitated –> overfiring

inhibited –> underfiring

= both lead to increase risk of injury and pain
