CPA Flashcards
Medial Pterygoid CS
Superior Vertical Strain
Name: Superior Sphenoid Base (sphenoid is flexed)
Axes: Two transverse (left to right)
Palpatory findings: O+S rotate together (rotate anteriorly); 1st moves inferiorly, pinky moves superiorly (head feels like it rolls away from you)
Suboccipital Triangle
Left SB Strain
Name: side that is fuller/convexity developed in cranium (flexed side)
Axes: one sagittal (A-P), two vertical (sup/inf)
motion same direction about sagittal, opposite about vertical
Palpatory Findings: side of lower sphenoid wing + O is flexed, and high side is extended; left hand spreads open, right hand pinches together
S + O rotate to side of SB (meaning the inferior side matches the SB
–> left side of O + S is lower/you have a left rotation)
Masseter CS
Inferior Vertical Strain
Name: Inferior Sphenoid Base (sphenoid is extended)
Axes: Two transverse (left to right)
Palpatory findings: O+S rotate together (rotate posteriorly); 1st moves superiorly, pinky moves inferiorly (head feels like it rolls toward from you)
PC1 Occiput, PC2 Occiput
Cervical HVLA: Rotation Emphasis
remember to start with a preparatory technique!
Left Lateral Strain
Name: Base of Sphenoid to Left
Axis: two vertical (one through O, one through S)
Palpatory findings: O + S rotate together; 1st and pinky fingers move opposite, and direction of pinky finger goes left, and sides of strain (left) moves slightly anterior
Right SB Strain
Name: side that is fuller/convexity developed in cranium (flexed side)
Axes: one sagittal (A-P), two vertical (sup/inf)
Palpatory Findings: side of lower sphenoid wing + O is flexed, and high side is extended; right hand spreads open, left hand pinches together
S + O rotate to side of SB (meaning the inferior side matches the SB
–> right side of O + S is lower/you have a right rotation)
Temporals + Parietals are externally rotated on fuller side, mandible shifts towards fuller side, frontal bone + orbit are more anterior on fuller side
