Muscle fibre types Flashcards
Two types of muscle fibres in body
- fast twitch (type 1
- slow twitch (type 2a and type 2b
Slow twitch muscles
Smaller
red in colour- rich blood supply from lots of capillaries
high amount of oxidization
Describe contraction of slow twitch muscles
can contract repeatedly but not forcefully
- suited to long distance, endurance exercise
Fast twitch muscles (type 2 in general)
- bigger
- poor blood supply (thus pale colouring
- tend to become more anaerobic due to less blood supply
Describe contraction of fast twitch (type 2) muscles
- can contract forcefully but fatigue quickly
- suited to high intensity short duration exercise
Fast twitch (type 2a)
- white/ red (pink) in colour
- have both aerobic and anaerobic capabiltiies
(less fatigue resistant but higher speed than type 1)
Describe contraction of fast twitch (type 2a) muscles
rapid rate, can force repeatedly
Fast twitch type 2b muscles
- bigger, white
- poor blood supply
Describe contraction of fast twitch (type 2b) muscles
- can contract rapidly and forcefully for limited amount of time
Distribution of muscle fibre types in bodies
- each muscle contains a mixture of the different fibre types
- proportions of fibre types are different between individuals and between different muscles of the individual
Table (fill blank)
- no need “glycolytic” and “oxidative capacity”

Proportions of fibre types in sport.
- varies in different muscles of the same person
fast thrower-> high proportion of fast twitch fibres in arms
yet be a slow runner-> large percentage of slow twitch fibre in legs
what determines the proportions of fibre types in a person?
genetic inheritance of fibres determines your speed or endurance potential
