Trapezius
O: Superior nuchal line, External Occipital protuberance, Ligamentum nuchae, Spinous Processes of C7-T12
I: Superior edge of the crest of the Spine of Scapula, Acromion, Posterior border of lateral 1/3 of clavicle.
Accessory Nerve (CNXI)
Upper–elevates
Middle–retracts
Lower–depress and upwardly rotate scapula.
Latissimus dorsi
O: Spinous processes of T12 - L5, Thorocolumbar fascio of the spinous processes of th elumbar vertebrae, related interspinous ligaments and iliac crest; lower 3-4 ribs.
I: Floor of intertubercular sulcus of humerus
Thoracodorsal N.
Adduction, Internal rotation, and Extension of upper arm. (Helps raise body toward the arm when climbing.)
Levator Scapulae
O: Transverse process of C1 and C2 and Posterior tubercles of transverse processes of C3-C4.
I: Posterior surface of medial border of scapula from superior angle to root of the spine of scapula.
Dorsal Scapular Nerve
Elevates Scapula
Rhomboid Minor
O: Lower end of ligamentum nuchae and spinous processes of C7 and T1.
I: Posterior surface of medial border of scapula at the root of the spine of the scapula.
Dorsal Scapular Nerve
Elevates and retracts scapula.
Downward rotation of scapula.
Rhomboid Major
O: Spinous processes of T2-T5 and intervening supraspinous ligaments.
I: Posterior surface of medial border of scapula from rrot of the spine of the scapula to the inferior angle.
Dorsal Scapular Nerve
Elevates and retracts scapula
Downward rotation of scapula.
Serratus Posterior Superior
O: Lower portion of ligamentum nuchae, Spinous processes of C7-T3, supraspinous ligaments.
I: Upper border of ribs 2-5 just lateral to the angle of the rib.
Anterior rami of upper thoracic nerves
Elevate ribs 2 - 5
Elevates ribs 2-5
Serratus Posterior Inferior
O: Spinous processes of T11-L3 and Supraspinous ligaments.
I: Lower border of ribs 9-12 just lateral to their angles
Anterior rami of lower thoracic nerves
Depress ribs 9-12, may prevent lower ribs from being elevated when diaphragm contracts
Splenius Capitis
O: Lower half of ligamentum nuchae, Spinous processes of C7-T4
I: Mastoid process of skull below lateral 1/3 of superior nuchal line.
Posterior rami of middle cervical nerves.
Together–draw head backwards, extending neck.
Individually–draw and rotate head and neck to one side (turn face to same side)
Splenius Cervicus
O: Spinous processes of T3-T6
I: Transverse processes of C1-C3
Posterior rami of lower cervical nerves
Together-Extend neck.
Individually-draw and rotate head to one side (turn face to same side)
Iliocostalis lumborum
O: Sacrum, Spinous process of lumbar and lower two thoracic vertebrae and their supraspinous ligaments, Iliac crest.
I: Angles of the lower six or seven ribs
Segmental branches of posterior rami of spinal nerves.
Bilaterally–Straighten back, returning it to upright position from flexed.
Unilaterally–bend vertebral column laterally
Iliocostalis thoracis
O: Angles of the lower 6 ribs.
I: Angles of the upper six ribs and the transverse processes of C7
Segmental branches of posterior rami of spinal nerves.
Bilaterally–Straighten back, returning it to upright position from flexed.
Unilaterally–bend vertebral column laterally
Iliocostalis cervicis
O: Angles of ribs 3-6
I: Transverse processes of C4 to C6
Segmental branches of posterior rami of spinal nerves.
Bilaterally–Straighten back, returning it to upright position from flexed, and pull the head posteriorly
Unilaterally–bend vertebral column laterally
Longissimus thoracis
O: Blends with iliocostalis in lumbar region and is attached to transverse processes of lumbar vertebrae.
I: Transverse processes of all thoracic vertebrae and just lateral to the tubercles of the lower 9 or 10 ribs.
Segmental branches of posterior rami of spinal nerves.
Bilaterally–Straighten back, returning it to upright position from flexed.
Unilaterally–bend vertebral column laterally
Longissimus cervicis
O: Transverse processes of T1 to T4 or T5 thoracic vertebrae.
I: Transverse processes of C2-C6
Segmental branches of posterior rami of spinal nerves.
Bilaterally–Straighten back, returning it to upright position from flexed, and pull the head posteriorly.
Unilaterally–bend vertebral column laterally
Longissimus capitis
O: Transverse processes T1 to T4 or T5 vertebrae and articular processes of T3 or T4 to T7 cervical vertebrae.
I: Posterior margin of the mastoid process
Segmental branches of posterior rami of spinal nerves.
Bilaterally–Straighten back, returning it to upright position from flexed, and pull the head posteriorly
Unilaterally–bend vertebral column laterally, turns the head to the actively contracting side.
