O: Superior nuchal line, External Occipital protuberance, Ligamentum nuchae, Spinous Processes of C7-T12
I: Superior edge of the crest of the Spine of Scapula, Acromion, Posterior border of lateral 1/3 of clavicle.

Accessory Nerve (CNXI)

Upper–elevates
Middle–retracts
Lower–depress and upwardly rotate scapula.

Latissimus dorsi

A

O: Spinous processes of T12 - L5, Thorocolumbar fascio of the spinous processes of th elumbar vertebrae, related interspinous ligaments and iliac crest; lower 3-4 ribs.
I: Floor of intertubercular sulcus of humerus

Thoracodorsal N.

Adduction, Internal rotation, and Extension of upper arm. (Helps raise body toward the arm when climbing.)

A

I: Posterior surface of medial border of scapula at the root of the spine of the scapula.

A

I: Upper border of ribs 2-5 just lateral to the angle of the rib.

Serratus Posterior Inferior

A

O: Spinous processes of T11-L3 and Supraspinous ligaments.
I: Lower border of ribs 9-12 just lateral to their angles

Anterior rami of lower thoracic nerves

Depress ribs 9-12, may prevent lower ribs from being elevated when diaphragm contracts

A

O: Lower half of ligamentum nuchae, Spinous processes of C7-T4
I: Mastoid process of skull below lateral 1/3 of superior nuchal line.

Posterior rami of middle cervical nerves.

Together–draw head backwards, extending neck.
Individually–draw and rotate head and neck to one side (turn face to same side)

Spinalis capitis

A

O: Usually blends with semispinalis capitis
O: Transverse processes of T1 to T6 (or T7) and C7 and articular processes of C4 to C6.

I: With semispinalis capitis
I: Medial area between the superior and inferior nuchal lines of occipital bone.

Segmental branches of posterior rami of spinal nerves.

Bilaterally–Straighten back, returning it to upright position from flexed, and pull the head posteriorly.
Unilaterally–bend vertebral column laterally, and turn the head to the actively contracting side.
