Abdomen Flashcards
Name 6 qualities of the abdomen
Largest of the great cavities.
Major part of the abdominopelvic cavity.
Located between the diaphragm and the pelvic inlet.
Continuous with the pelvic cavity.
Location of most digestie organs, parts of the urogenital system and spleen.
Normally divided into 4 quatrants.
Name the 4 abdominal muscles
External oblique.
Internal oblique.
Transverse abdominal.
Rectus abdominis.
Describe the External Oblique...4 Size Location. Fiber orientation. Fibers blend with what other muscle?
Largest and most superficial of the anterolateral abdominal muscles.
Most of the fleshy fibers run inferomedially.
Fibers become continuous with the contralateral internal oblique.
Describe the Internal oblique…
Location
Physical quality
Fiber orientation.
Intermediate of the anterolateral abdominal muscles.
Thin muscular sheet that fans out anteromedially.
Fleshy fibers are perpendicular to fibers of the external oblique and run superomedially.
Describe the Transverse abdominal Fiber orientation (2) Function.
Fibers run transversally except for the inferior ones which run parallel to the internal oblique.
Compresses the abdominal contents, increasing the intra-abdominal pressure.
What are the 4 functions of the anterolateral abdominal muscles?
Form a strong expandable support for the anterolateral abdominal wall (intertwined for strength).
Protect the abdominal viscera from injury.
Compress the abdominal contents to maintain or increase intra-abdominal pressure.
Move the trunk and help maintain posture.
What are the actions of the External oblique?
Both sides contracting: Flexes trunk.
One side contracting: Bends trunk to the same side.
Turns anterior part of abdomen to opposite side.
What are the actions of the internal oblique?
Both sides contracting: Flexes trunk.
One side contracting: Bends trunk and turns anterior part of abdomen to the same side.
What are the functions of the Rectus Abdominis?
Compresses abdominal contents.
Flexes vertebral column.
Tenses abdominal wall.
