Muscle Balance And Exercise Flashcards
6 signs of upper crossed syndrome?
Forward head posture
Increased cervical lordosis
Increased kyphosis at cervicothoracic junction
Protraction of shoulders
Internal rotation of humerus
Stresses, c4-5, cervicocranial and cervicothoracic junctions
What is mnemonic for hypertonic muscles of upper crossed syndrome and what are the muscles?
Slupslus
Subscapularis, levator scapula, UE, flexors, pectoral, scalene, lats, Upper trap, SCM
What can a bilateral shoulder flexion exam show us?
Resting length of lats and influenced on thoracic and lumbar spines.
What is the prescription of exercise stretching? How many different stretches, how many times per day and for how long? How often do we reassess?
2-3 exercises
2-3 times a day
12 seconds or 3 deep breaths
Reassess each week
What do we do after stretching And how often per day?
Retraining exercises
2-3 times per day
What specific retraining are we having the patient do?
Sensory motor balance
What is the goal of stretching exercise program?
Transition to their general fitness program. Should not strength train until pain free stretching is accomplished.
What is the principle behind a general fitness program and what is optimal?
Meet them where they are at
50 minutes a day/ 5 days a week
4 reasons we would evaluate CV or respiratory systems for a patient we are prescribing a general fitness program?
Extreme fatigue after or during exercise
Pain above the wrist
cant even talk due to SOB
Family history of CV
7 muscles we are focused on stretching for lower quarter imbalance?
Iliopsoas, adductors, TFL, hamstrings, QL, piriformis, rectus femoris
What is a positive and negative cervical flexion test?
Positive: SCM and and scalenes flex the neck instead of long coli so no chin nod
Negative: chin nod because long coli flexes the neck
So what does the positive cervical neck test indicate?
Tight SCM and scalenes and inhibited long coli
What does the scapular stabilization test indicate if its positive and what is a positive test?
Winging scapula
Weak lower trap, stratus anterior and rhomboids
How do we do a pec minor asymmetry test?
Patient supine. Hold one shoulder while pushing down on the other feeling for PROM and hard end feel. Do it to other side.
Where are the two scalene CS points and the treatment position?
Rib 1 1/3 distance from midline
Rib 2 2/3 distance from midline
Anterosuperior borders on both
F TT
