Muscle action Flashcards
Deltoid - action
All abduct the shoulder at glenohumeral joint Anterior - flexes shoulder at GH joint, medially roates shoulder at GH joint, and horizontaally adducts the shoulder at GH joint Posterior - Extends shoulder at GH joint, laterally rotates shoulder at GH joint, and horizontally adducts shoulder at GH joint
Trapezius - action
All extend the head and neck Upper - laterally flex head and neck to same side, rotate the head and neck to opposite side, elevate scapula Middle - adduct the scapula, stabilize the scapula Lower - depress the scapula, upwardly rotate the scapula
Latissimus Dorsi - action
Extend the shoulder at GH joint, adduct the shoulder at GH joint, and medially rotate the shoulder at the GH joint
Teres Major - Action
Extend shoulder at GH joint, adduct shoulder at GH joint, and medially rotate shoulder at GH joint
Supraspinatus - Action
Abduct the shoulder at GH joint. stabilize head of humerus in glenoid cavity
Teres Minor - action
laterally rotate shoulder at GH joint, adduct shoulder at GH joint, stabilize head of humerus in glenoid cavity
Infraspinatus - action
laterally rotate shoulder at GH joint, adduct the shoulder at the GH joint, and stabilize head of humerus at glenoid cavity
Suubscapularis - action
medially rotate shoulder at GH joint, Stabilize head of humerus
Rhomboid Major - action
adduct the scapula (scapulothoracic joint), Elevate the scapula at ST joint, downwardly rotate scapula at ST joint
Rhomboid Minor - Action
Adduct scapula at ST joint, elevate scapula at ST joint, and downwardly rotate scapula at ST joint
Levator scapula - action
elevate scapula at ST joint, downwardly rotate scapula at ST joint, laterally flex head and and neck, and rotate head and neck to the same side - bilaterally extend head and neck
Serratus Anterior - action
with origin (ribs) fixed: Abduction of scapula at ST joint, upwardly rotate scapula at ST joint, depress scapula at ST joint, hold medial border of scapula against the rib cage with scapula fixed: may elevate border the thorax during forced inhalation
Pectoralis Major - Action
All fibers: Adduct shoulder at GH joint, medially rotate at GH joint, and assist to elevate thorax during forced inhalation Upper fibers: Flex shoulder at GH joint, horizontally adduct shoulder at GH joint Lower fibers: Extend shoulder at GH joint
Pectoralis Minor - action
Depress scapula at ST joint, abduct scapula at ST joint, downwardly rotate scapula at ST joint, may assist to elevate thorax during forced inhalation
Subclavius - action
Depress clavicle and draw it anteriorly, elevate first rib (assist during inhalation), stabilize SC joint
Biceps Brachii - action
Flex the elbow (humeroulnar joint), Supinate forearm (radioulnar joint), and flex shoulder (glenohumeral joint)
Triceps Brachii - action
All: extend the elbow (humeroulnar joint) Long head: Extend shoulder (glenohumeral joint), adduct shoulder GH joint
Coracobrachialis - action
Flex shoulder at GH joint, adduct shoulder at GH joint
Brachialis - action
Flex elbow (humeroulnar joint)
Brachioradialis - action
Flex elbow (humeroulnar joint), assist pronation and supination when there is resistance
Extensor Carpi Radialis Longus - action
Extend wrist (radiocarpal joint), abduct wrist (radiocarpal joint), assist flexion of elbow (humeroulnar joint)
Extensor Carpi Radialis Brevis - action
extend wrist (radiocarpal joint), abduct wrist (radiocarpal joint), assist flexion of elbow (humeroulnar joint)
Extensor Carpi Ulnaris - action
Extend wrist (radiocarpal joint), adduct wrist (radiocarpal joint)
Extensor Digitorum - action
Extend 2nd - 5th fingers and assist extension of wrist (radiocarpal joint)
Anconeus - action
extend elbow (humeroulnar joint)
Extensor Indicis - action
extend 2nd finger (metacarpophalangeal joint), adduct 2nd finger, and may assit extension of wrist (radiocarpal joint)
