-Dates back to the late 80s
-So many on the market: logic pro, protools, reaper, etc.
-Steep learning curve, reluctant to switch once they learn one.

How is a DAW used?
-The primary purposes are to play, record, edit.
-Hosts VST instruments
-Can record from real instruments right into DAW
What is pitch correction software/autotune?
Quantization: rounding pitches to whatever the closest pitch is on a scale or keyboard.
-Takes data of singers voice and snaps to make it sound good.
-Melodyne:
-more sophisticated pitch correction software, change pitches, detects vowels and constinants, and how they are sung.
-Everyone uses pitch correction
Why would an artist re-record their music?
-Collect far higher royalties when the new music is used in tv shows, movies, ads etc.
-Collect more per stream as well.
-Establish greater control over music and smoosh the people who may have taken advantage of the artist as they were just starting out, for instance JoJo and her song get out.
-In taylor swift’s case she is rerecording to reclaim ownership over her catalogue.
Order of Events: from Physical to Digital Media
-We began with records which accounted for the physical media, and alognside touring and shows made the music industry very investable
-Cds were the next item, they were disks that held the MP3 files on the tracks, better than casettes because the quality never diminished.
-From here mixtapes exploded, and with it file sharing services like Napster which introduced JPG and GIF and MP3
-Piracy exploded with people caring for affordability over quality,
-mp3 players exploded as well and then,
-Finally ended up with streaming, people never owned the music, altered the music industry, artists made nothing by putting their music on spotify.
What was MTVs Significance?
MTV or Music Television can be contributed to the exposition of new artists to the public
-Peaked in the 1980s
-Focused on music videos
-Gave out their own video music awards and the movie awards
-in 1983 played michael jackson which was huge bc he was black
-Broadcasted live concerts
-Really catpulted music culture
-in the 90s created reality TV like jersey shore.
What is teen pop?
-Subgenre of pop
-Targets teen audiences
-Simple lyrics, catchy melodies, youthful image, people teens can look up to.
-Prominent in charts and media.
80s-90s: menudo, new edition, the jets, new kids on the block, kylie minogue, debbie gibson.
90s-2k: Britney, *NSYNC, Backstreet Boys, Christina Aguleira.
2000s+: Hannah Montana, Jonas bros, selena etc.
Electronic Instruments & How they are used:
Synthesizer: Generates and manipulates various soundwaves to create a wide range of sounds and tones.
EX: Wendy Carlos
Wurlitzer Electric Piano/Organ: Play it like a piano, link it to an amp, super sleek and produces a rich, nostalgic sound.
Drum Machine/Electronic Drum Kit: drum set with electronic triggers. Offers versatile sound options, easy recording, and integration with other electronic instruments.
