Murmurs--Johns Flashcards
Aortic Stenosis
- murmur type*
- where is it heard best*
systolic murmur
heard best over base of heart, also shooting up into carotids
Mitral Regurgitation
- murmur type*
- where is it heard best*
systolic murmur
heard best over apex of heart
radiates to axilla
Mitral Stenosis
- murmur type*
- where is it heard best*
diastolic murmur
(low-pitched rumble)
heard best w/ bell over apex of heart
Aortic Regurgitation
- murmur type*
- where is it heard best*
diastolic murmur
base of heart
Mitral Valve Prolapse
- murmur type*
- where is it heard best*
systolic murmur
apex
Physical exam findings of aortic regurgitation
bounding pulses
high pulse pressure
Mitral valve prolapse
pathophysiology
myxomatous degeneration of posterior leaflet
Sx of aortic stenosis
and their pathophysiology
angina
syncope
due to obstruction of flow through coronary arteries, causing angina and decreased perfusion of the brain, causing sycope
Why is it such a good thing to know when someone has asymptomatic aortic regurgitation?
because one it becomes symptomatic it has usually caused signifigant left ventricular hypertrophy
When does a mitral valve get replaced?
only once Sx start to interfere with daily life
What unusual pathology can cause aortic insufficiency?
blunt trauma
such as airbags
