What were the reasons for Hitler attempting a Putsch?
> Lots of Nationalist Politicians in Bavaria
> Had support of General Ludendorff
> French had invaded Ruhr- Nationalists fed up with Stresemann’s policy of passive resistance- saw it as agreement of TOV
Describe the events of the Munich Putsch (first day)
> November 8th 1923- Bavarian Prime Minister Gustav Kahr addressed a meeting of businessmen at a beer hall in Munich
> Hitler and 600 SA men burst into the hall. Hitler shouted out “The revolution has broken out. The hall is surrounded!”
> Kahr, Lossow and Seisser taken into side room and threatened at gunpoint to join Hitler in a rebellion.
Describe the events of the Munich Putsch (second day)
> November 9th- Hitler begins march in Munich
> Kahr changes his mind and organised police to arrest Nazis
> 16 Nazis killed, 4 policemen killed
> Ludendorff arrested
> Hitler fled but got arrested 2 days later. Also reportedly dislocated in arm.
What were some of the consequences of the Munich Putsch?
> Hitler tried for treason but got nationwide publicity
> Used trial to make anti-Weimar speech and disgust at TOV- lots of Germans agreed
> Only served nine months of 5 year sentence
> Wrote ‘Mein Kampf’ in Prison- enabled him to spread his views to millions
How did Hitler change his tactics after the Munich Putsch?
> Targeted urban and rural voters
> Asked Roehm to resign as SA leader to help reputation
> Asked Goebbels to be in charge of propaganda
> Realised he’d have to come to power by constitutional means- ‘hold nose and enter Reichstag’
