A
Unilateral or bilateral inflammation of the parotid gland is usual:
- one parotid gland swells first
- in 70% of cases the opposite side swells after 1 or 2 d.

Relatively common complications include:
A
orchitis
aseptic meningitis (benign)
transient abdominal pain

Treatment
A
Symptomatic
Paracetamol for fever
Ample fluid intake and bed rest
Exclusions (patient 9 d, contacts nil)
