Mumps Presentation
A
- Can be asymptomatic
- Non specific symptoms lasting a few days, fever, headache, malaise, myalgia
- Parotitis can be unilateral
- Mouth cannot be opened and is dry due to blocked ducts
- Orchitis can occur four or five days after the start of parotitis
- Can occur without parotitis
- Orchitis presents with chills, sweats, headache, backache, swinging temperature and severe tenderness
- Scrotum is often swollen, testis often impalpable
- Usually unilateral
- Meningism occurs in 15% usually without parotitis
- Meningitis usually mild and self limiting

Mumps Differentials
A
- Tonsillitis, pharyngitis, IM
- Consider HIV
- Consider as a cause of meningitis

Mumps Investigations
A
- Clinical diagnosis in most cases
- All cases require laboratory confirmation
- Contact local HPU to take oral fluid sample
- Use USS to differentiate mumps from torsion

Mumps Management
A
-Supportive, keep mouth moist

Mumps Prognosis
A
-Usually self limiting with full recovery within 1-2 weeks

Mumps Complications
A
- Oophoritis
- Deafness
- Pancreatitis
