Infectious Mononucleosis Causative Pathogens
A
- 90% EBV
- 10% not EBV, mostly CMV

Infectious Mononucleosis Presentation
A
- Most have few symptoms
- Low grade fever, fatigue and malaise
- Sore throat
- Exudative and large tonsils
- Palatal petechiae and uvular oedema
- Transient upper lid oedema
- Lymphadenopathy

Infectious Mononucleosis Differentials
A
- GAS (does not have posterior cervical, inguinal or axillary adenopathy, palatine petechiae, splenomegaly or atypical lymphocytosis
- Bilateral periorbital oedema may also be due to Kawasaki

Infectious Mononucleosis Investigations
A
- Test heterophile antibodies first
- If still negative after 6 weeks with an IM illness, test for EBV specific antibodies

- Burkitt’s
- Hodgkins

Infectious Mononucleosis Management
A
- Paracetamol
- Avoid contact sports
- Avoid alcohol
- Steroids if airway obstruction
