Multistore Model of Memory - AO1 Flashcards
who assumed there were three separate memory stores
Atkinson and Shiffrin
What are the three main stores of memory
Sensory memory
short-term memory
Long-term memory
What makes the memory stores different from one another
way info is processed - encoding
how much info can be stored - capacity
How long - duration
how does information pass from store to store
in a linear way
what is the information processing model
info is detected by sensory organs and enters the sensory memory - stores sensory stimuli
if attended to the sensory info moves into the STM for temporary storage
then if the info is given elaborative rehearsal (meaning) it is passed into the LTM
What is maintenance rehearsal?
Repetition keeps information in the STM but eventually transfers it into LTM, although it is not reliably retained in LTM.
What is elaborative rehearsal?
A technique to help the short-term memory store thoughts or ideas and pass them into the long-term memory. It works by relating new concepts to old concepts that are already in the long-term memory so that these new concepts stick.
