Multimodal Perception Flashcards
What are the sensory modalities?
Sight, sound, touch, taste, smell, etc.
What is a receptive field?
A receptive field is the portion of the world to which a neuron will respond if there is a sensory stimulus present
What is a cross modal receptive field?
A crossmodal receptive field is one that can be stimulated by more than one sensory modality
What does superior colliculus contain?
Superior colliculus contains individual neurons that process both visual and auditory stimuli. This helps with orienting and locating in space
What do convergence zones do?
Convergence zones integrate inputs from different sensory modalities. Some neurons in the primary visual cortex respond to auditory information
What happens when two sources of stimulation are spatially related?
When two sources of stimulation are spatially related, we get a super additive effect
How does a super additive effect come about?
When two sources of stimulation are spatially related
What is an example of the super additive effect?
The McGurk Effect
What is the McGurk Effect?
The McGurk Effect is an auditory-visual illusion where the perceived sound of speech changes due to conflicting visual and auditory information
What does multimodal phenomena concern?
Multimodal phenomena concerns the binding of inputs from multiple sensory modalities and the effects of this binding on perception
What is the Rubber Hand Illusion?
The Rubber Hand Illusion is when visual information interacts with tactile information to affect body ownership
When does cross modal phenomena occur?
Crossmodal phenomena occurs when one sensory modality changes or influences the perception of another sensory modality
