Multicultural Cognition & Identity Flashcards

1
Q

Cultural Frame Switching (Hong et al., 2000)

A

Multicultural people have multiple cultural lenses (monocultural people only have one cultural lens - the point of this course is to expand our thinking from your culture to understand the other cultures!)

Q

Multiple identities & multiple in-groups

A

Multicultural individuals have multiple identities (identify with more than one culture) which means they are a part of multiple in-groups, and have a broader social network (social connections because of higher affinity, higher bias, and possible homophily).

Q

When you internalise your culture, is it possible to internalise the cultures into one hybrid culture?

A
  • Yes. Research shows that some multicultural individuals merge the cultural beliefs & frames into one hybrid cultural identity (not comparmentalised).

Q

Compartmentalised cultures vs Hybrid cultural frame

A

Multicultural persons who compartmentalise their different cultures engage in:
- Frame switching
- integrative complexity

Some multicultural persons may not separate their cultural but merge the cultural frames into one cultural identity (occurs in the event of early immersive culture mixing).
