dialect
The form of a spoken language peculiar to a region, social group, etc.
bias
A slant toward a particular belief.
culture
A pattern of many concepts, beliefs, values, habits, skills, instruments, and art of a given group of people in a given period.
regionalism
Speech or manners representative of a specific geographical location.
prejudice
The process of “prejudging” something, usually in a biased manner.
Ethnocentrism
The belief that one’s own group or culture is superior to all other groups or cultures.
Stereotyping
The habit of attaching an uncomplimentary or generalized label to a person, race, idea, or the like.
African American Vernacular English (AAVE)
Colloquially know as Ebonics, or Black English.
High-context communication
Communication style that involves great reliance on body language, reference to objects in the environment, and culturally relevant phraseology to convey an idea. Relies on the listener knowing related events through close association with the speaker or culture.
Low-context communication
Communication style that utilizes few environmental or cultural idioms to convey an idea or concept. Ideas are spelled out explicitly.
Perceptions
The images people have in their minds of places, situations, or events. Perceptions may differ from reality.
folk medicine
Traditional medicine practiced without a scientific understanding of the processes involved, usually handed down to the common people from earlier times.
