Multicellular organisms: Types Of Reproduction Flashcards
What is reproduction
Reproduction is the process by which new offspring are produced from their parent(s)
Why is reproduction important
Organisms reproduce to pass on their genes and create new members of their species. If the organisms of a species all fail to reproduce then the species may become EXTINCT!
Types of reproduction
Sexual reproduction & Asexual reproduction
What number of parent(s) in Sexual reproduction
2
What’s the appearance of asexual reproduced offspring
Identical to the parent
Do you have genetic variation in sexual reproduction
Yes
Give me an example of organism that is sexual reproduced
Humans, fish, bugs, some flowers, some lizards, giraffes, birds ( every mammal)
What is an example of asexual reproducing organism
Potatoes, onions, garlic, strawberry plant, spider plant, mother of millions, mother tongue, starfish, some lizards, bacteria, jellyfish
What is sexual reproduction
Offspring are produced from the fusion of a male sex cell with a female sex cell (also known as fertilisation)
What’s an advantage of sexual reproduction
Variation in a population enables species to adapt to changing environmental conditions
Advantage of Asexual reproduction
Population grows quickly
Disadvantaged of Sexual reproduction
It takes longer for a sexual reproductive population to grow
Disadvantage of asexual reproduction
Asexual reproduction doesn’t produce variations so it can’t adapt to changing environmental condition
What’s an example of asexual reproduction in plants
Potatoes, strawberry plants, onions, garlic, mother tongue, mother of millions, spider plants
What’s an example of asexual reproduction in animals
Some lizards, starfish, jellyfish, sea anemones, flat worms,
What’s an example of asexual reproduction in single called organisms
Bacteria, amoeba
What’s an example of sexual reproduction in plants
Flowering plants
What’s an example of sexual reproduction in animals
Humans, mammals, birds, various fishes, insects
Sexual or asexual reproduction?
There are two parents and genetic information is passed on from both of these to the offspring
Sexual reproduction
Sexual or asexual reproduction?
The offspring are clones of their parents
Asexual
Sexual or asexual reproduction?
There is only one parent and all genetic information is passed on to the offspring from this one parent
Asexual reproduction
Sexual or asexual reproduction?
There is more genetic variation on n this type of reproduction
Sexual
Sexual or asexual reproduction?
There is no genetic variation among the offspring
Asexual
