Multicellular Organisms Flashcards
What are living things called?
Living things are called organisms.
What are living things made up of?
All living things are made up of cells.
What is a cell?
A cell is a tiny volume of a watery fluid enclosed in a membrane and is the smallest unit that can live on its own and that makes up all living organisms and the tissues of the body.
What is the purpose of cells?
Cells provide the structure and carry out the life processes of living things.
What are living things capable of?
- Movement.
- Nutrition.
- Respiration.
- Excretion.
- Growth.
- Reproduction.
- Respond to Stimuli.
What are the aspects of the cell theory?
- All living things consist of one or more cells.
- All cells arise from pre-existing cells.
- The cell is the fundamental unit of structure and function of all living organisms.
What are the different types of organisms?
Unicellular (made of one cell).
Multicellular (made of many cells).
What is the modern cell theory?
- There is a flow of energy in cells.
- Genetic Material (DNA) is passed on when cells divide.
- All cells have similar chemical composition consisting of macromolecules, simple molecules and ions/atoms.
What is the definition of a cell?
A cell is the smallest unit that is capable of performing life functions.
What are the different types of cells?
Prokaryotic (Single cell organisms).
Eukaryotic (Multicellular organisms).
What are the characteristics of Prokaryotic cells?
Prokaryotic cells are single-cell organisms such as bacteria.
1.No membrane-bound organelles
2. No nucleus.
3. Have less DNA than eukaryotes.
4. Usually a circular chromosome.
5. Smaller than eukaryote cells (1 – 10 um).
What are the characteristics of Eukaryotic cells?
Eukaryotic cells are found in multicellular organisms and are found in most living organisms.
1. Have a nucleus.
2. Have membrane-bound organelles.
3. Have more DNA than prokaryotic cells.
4. Larger than prokaryotic cells (1 – 100um).
What are the different characteristics of Prokaryotic cells and Eukaryotic cells?
Eukaryotic cells are found in multicellular organisms and are found in most living organisms.
1. Have a nucleus.
2. Have membrane-bound organelles.
3. Have more DNA than prokaryotic cells.
