What is the ‘Golden Hour’?
The critical trauma patient must be given definitive surgical care within 60min otherwise their chance for survival diminishes rapidly.
What is the trimodal distribution of death?
Immediate (within first hour): lacerations to brain, brainstorm, spinal cord, aorta or heart.
Early deaths (2-3 hours): TBI, hemopnueumothorax, pelvic fractures, long bone fractures or abdo injuries.
Late deaths (days to weeks): Sepsis, MOI
What part of the aorta is often sheared due to deceleration forces?
At the ligamentum arteriosum
Causes rapid exsanguination

Indicates Cardiac Tamponade
