Multi Store Model Of Memory By Atkinson And Shriffin Flashcards
What are the 3 separate memory stores?
Sensory Register
Short term memory
Long term memory
How is information coded?
Information is changed so that it can be stored into memory.
Acoustically- what it sounds like
Visually- what it looks like
Semantically- based on the meaning
What is capacity?
The amount of information that can be held in memory
What is duration?
The length of time that a memory lasts
What are the three things that can help info to stay in STM?
1) Rehearsal helps keep the information in short term memory
2) The information is rehearsed and goes into long term memory
3) The information is not rehearsed and is forgotten
Capacity, Duration and Coding in, Sensory Register
Capacity : very large storage of information from each of the senses
Duration: Extremely brief less than 1/2 a second
Coding: from the eyes which are coded visually and sound coded into acoustic
Capacity, Duration and Coding in STM
Capacity: very limited about 7 chunks of info
Duration: Very short about 18 seconds
Coding: mainly acoustic
Capacity, Duration and Coding in LTM
Capacity: potentially unlimited
Duration: potentially last almost a whole lifetime
Coding: mainly semantic
