Q

What is the multi store model comprised of? And what’s it’s duration, coding and capacity?

A

Sensory register- Unlimited, half a second, all 5 senses
Short term- 5-9 items (7+-2), 18-30 seconds, acoustic.
Long term- Unlimited, Unlimited, semantic

Q

How the model works?

A

A stimulus from the environment enters the SR. Only information that is payed attention to enters the STM. Info is lost from the STM through decay and forgetting, info that is rehearsed enters the long term memory.

Q

Strengths of the multi store model?

A

Research shows that the first few and last few numbers in a list are recalled better than the middle ones. This shows that STM and LTM are separate stores bc the first few numbers are rehearsed and passed into the LTM, the last are recent and are in the STM.
Korsakoff’s syndrome- this is a form of amnesia, when shown a list of numbers they can recall the last few numbers (unimpaired recency effect) suggesting unimpaired STM. However LTM is poor.

The case study of HM, he had brain surgery which resulted in memory loss, he could still create STM memory’s but not formulate LTM memorys. Suggesting there are different systems in the brain for different types of memory.

Q

Weaknesses of the model?

A

Evidence there is more than one type of STM- The case study of KF who had amnesia showed his recall of digits when they were read out to him was poor- read by himself recall better- shows there could be visual and auditory STMs. Working memory model better explanation
Research used lack ecological validity- artificial environment in realistic tasks.
Research evidence showing there is different LTM memory stores.
