multi store model of memory Flashcards
outline AO1
atkinson and shiffrin proposed the multi store model of memory composing of three stores transferring information in a linear way.
these are the sensory the short and the long term stores.
sensory register has five stores- main ones are iconic and echoic.
duration= milliseconds
capacity= large
coding= relative to which register is
If attention is payed to the stimulus it moves to the short term memory store
coding= acoustic
duration= 18 seconds
capacity= 7+or-2
If information elaboratively rehearsed moves into ltm store
capacity= unlimited
duration= potentially ulimated
coding= semantic
AO3 evaluation
(positives) with counterpoint
+ research support showing the stm and ltm are differerent stores- alan baddely founfd that words that sound similar phoneticallty when using stm but when using the ltm words are mixed up if they are semantically similar- this demonstrates that information processsing is different in the stm and the ltm
- however this research used digits words and consonant syllables meaning was not representative because did not have applied meaning as would in everyday life.
AO3 evaluation (negatives)
- evidence for more than one stm store Shallice and Warrington studied an amnesia patient KF
his visual digit span was significantly bigger than acoustically suggesting more than one store in the stm
further research 1974 showed that kf still had a non verbal stm intact which demonstrates that another two stores were intact verbal and non verbal stm. - elaborative rehearsal is needed to transfer information as opposed to prolonged rehearsal linking information to previously stored info
