coding capacity and duration Flashcards
what is coding
the process of converting information between different forms
coding research
Baddelly gave lists of different words to four groups of participants
group one accoustically similar
group two accoustically dissimilar
group three semantically similar
group four semantically dissimilar
coding research findings
found that when using the short term memory they did better with semantically similar words
when using the long term memory they did better with accoustic similar words
jacobs capacity research
Jacobs investigated the capacity of the stm and the ltm by measuring digit span. calling out 4 numbers and seeing if they can repeat them in order adding more and more. mean digit span was 9 mean word span was 7
miller capacity research
found that the capacity of our short term memory store is 7+ or - 2
and we recall digiots as easy as words as we use chunking
duration research STM
peterson gave the participants a consonant syllable to remeber and three digits to ccount backwards from to prevent any mental rehearsal
were asked to stop at 3,6,9,12,15,18 seconds within retention period
at 3 seconds retention was 80%
after 18 seconds it was about 3%
found that stm retention is 18seconds unless we complete verbal rehearsal
duration research LTM
Bahrick studied 392 students american aged between 17 and 79
obtained yearbooks from their school and completed a photo recognition test and free recall where they tried to remember all of the names of people in their graduate class
photo recognition- 90% recall within 15 years
70% after 48 years
free recall 30% after 48 years and 60% after 15
baddely coding evaluation
+ clearly distingiushed between the two seperate stores rather than generalising them as one
had significant contributions to the development of the multi store model of memory
- artificial tasks so lacks ecological validity because usually when we have to rmeber words meaning are applied to them so even if we are using the stm store we might be coding information semantically
