Multi Store Model Flashcards
what is a strengh of the MSM? (supporting evidence)
controlled lab studies on capacity, duration and coding have showed the existence of short and long term stores; the basis of MSM. for example Glanzer and Cunitz gave p/p’s 21 words to remember. they were most likely to remember words from the beginning of list (STM) and from the end of the list (LTM).
Brain scans also show a difference between STM and LTM. Beardsley found the prefrontal cortex is active during STM tasks but not LTM tasks
what is a strength of the MSM? (case studies)
studies of individuals with brain damage show how different areas are involved in STM/LTM.
EG case study of HM- he had an operation to remove hi hippocampus, and as result he could not form new long term memories
what is a limitation of the MSM? (too simplistic)
the MSM suggests that STM and LTM are single, unitary stores however research doesn’t agree. the working memory model (WMM) and it’s supporting research shows that STM is divided into qualitatively different stores; difference in the kind of memory that is stored.
Same for LTM (more than one kind)
what is a limitation of the MSM? (processing)
Craik and Lockhart suggested memories are created through processing; not just maintenance rehearsal. Things that are processed more deeply are more memorable.
Key study; Craik and Tulving
Gave p/p’s a noun and a question that involved shallow processing (if the noun was printed in caps) and deep processing (if the noun fit in the sentence). P/p’s were more likely to remember words from deep processing tasks. It is a key process in making long term memories
