Participants tend to remember the last few items better than those from the middle of the list. Earlier items are rehearsed so transfered to LTM whilst later items are recalled because they’re still in STM

People with Korsakoffs Syndrome provide support. They can recall the last items in a list suggesting an unaffected stm. However their ltm is very poor. Shows that stm and ltm are seperate stores

The multi store model explains this because earlier items will have been rehearsed better and transferred to LTM. If rehearsal is prevented by an interference task the effect disappears as the model predicts

1) in real life people don’t always spend time rehearsing information but still transfer it from STM to LTM. Rehearsal is not always needed for information to be stored and some items can’t be rehearsed e.g smells
2) oversimplified model as it assumes there is only one long term store and one short term store which has been disproved by brain damaged patients
