Multi Store Model Flashcards
What is the recency effect?
Participants tend to remember the last few items better than those from the middle of the list. Earlier items are rehearsed so transfered to LTM whilst later items are recalled because they’re still in STM
Give a study that supports the multi store model?
People with Korsakoffs Syndrome provide support. They can recall the last items in a list suggesting an unaffected stm. However their ltm is very poor. Shows that stm and ltm are seperate stores
What is the primacy effect?
Research shows that participants can recall the first few items of a list better than those from the middle. The multi store model explains this because earlier items will have been rehearsed better and transferred to LTM. If rehearsal is prevented by an interference task the effect disappears as the model predicts
Give two limitations of the mutli store model?
1) in real life people don’t always spend time rehearsing information but still transfer it from STM to LTM. Rehearsal is not always needed for information to be stored and some items can’t be rehearsed e.g smells
2) oversimplified model as it assumes there is only one long term store and one short term store which has been disproved by brain damaged patients
What three things does the multi store model consist of?
A sensory store, short term store and long term store
