Q

Sensory register

A

Take things in via senses
Separate memory stores: echoic store (info encoded acoustically), iconic store (info encoded visually)
Duration is half a second
High capacity (100 million cells in each eye, each sorting data)
If you pay attention it’ll pass to STM

Q

Short Term Memory

A

Limited capacity on average 5-9 chunks/peices
Last 20 seconds unless rehearsed
Maintenance rehearsal occurs to keep in STM and pass into LTM

Q

Long Term Memory

A

Capacity unlimited and last many years
Retrieval processed to transfer info back into STM

Q

Ao3 - strength - supporting evidence

A

P - other studies and theories support model of capacity, duration and encoding
E - Jacobs found capacity of STM is 5-9 chunks. Bahrick found LTM duration to be retrieved through images/names
Brain scans found there’s a difference between STM and LTM (hippocampus active when LTM is engaged
E- support the model making it more reliable

Q

Ao3 - strength - sperlings study

A

P - supports model on sensory store
E - study showed that, in the sensory store, info delays quickly, supports idea that duration is very limited ( study had to write something they saw in a blink)
E - model suggests sensory register material only lasts half a second - model supported with evidence

Q

Ao3 - limitation - too simple

A

P - model too simple to explain how complicated memory is
E - more than one type of short and long term memory (LTM can be procedural like riding a bike)
E - not useful for many aspects of memory which we use everyday
