Multi-Store Model Flashcards

1
Q

MSM

A

Atkinson and Shiffrin (1968) use this to describe how information flows through the memory system, which is made up of three stores linked by processes.

Q

Sensory Register

A

All stimulus passes into it. 5 different registers reflecting the 5 sense. Iconic for vision, and echoic for hearing. Coding is modality. Duration = 0.5 secs, high capacity, information pass into STM if paid attention to.

Q

STM

A

Coded acoustically. 18 secs duration unless maintenance rehearsal extended period of time in STM. Temporary store. Limited capacity 5-9 items. Perform prolonger rehearsal to transfer to LTM.

Q

LTM

A

Potentially permanent memory store that has been rehearsed for prolonged time. Coded semantically. Duration up to a lifetime. Capacity unlimited. Recall information to STM through process of retrieval.

Q

Strength

A

Research support - Baddeley (1966) coding of memory.
Shows separate.
However, lacks meaning so not generalisable.
Not valid model of memory in every day.

Q

Weakness (STM)

A

Evidence more than one STM store - Shallice and Warrington (1970) client with amnesia had poor recall of digits when read aloud, but when read self better.
Different STM stores for non-verbal sounds, decreasing validity.
However, used idiographic approach meaning can’t generalise.
Further research with nomothetic approach.

Q

Weakness (LTM)

A

Oversimplified.
Tulving (1985) types of LTM.
Wrong to assume only one.
However, useful to provide base that can be developed.
Careful how much rely on MSM and open to new ideas.
