Multi - Store Model Flashcards
Who proposed the Multi- store Model?
- Atkinson and Shiffrin
What does MSM explain?
- Explained as an information processing model (like a computer) with an input, process and output
What is capacity?
- How much information it can hold
What is duration?
- How long does information stay in that store
What is encoding?
- How much information is put into memory and is remembered
What is forgetting?
- Information that cannot be retrieved
What is retrieval?
- How we access our memories
What is storage?
- How much information we keep in our memory
What are the three stores of MSM?
- Sensory Memory
- Short term Memory
- Long term memory
What is sensory memory?
- It is the perception of senses information entering our brain
What is short term memory?
- Remembers pieces of information for a short period of time
What is long term memory?
- Information is repeated over as a possible way of learning and remembering it.
What is unattended information?
- lack of concentration and focus
What is attention?
- the concentration on the relevant information
What is the capacity of sensory memory?
- limited to 1 sensation
What is the duration of sensory memory?
- 0.5 seconds
What is the capacity of short term memory?
- 7 +- 2
What is the duration of short term memory?
18 to 30 seconds
What is the capacity of long term memory?
- unlimited
What is the duration of long term memory?
- unlimited
What is maintenance rehearsal?
- involves the repetition of information in its original, unaltered form
What is declarative memory?
- memory for general knowledge
What is procedural memory?
- memory for skills e.g. playing piano
What is episodic memory?
- memory for events, e.g. your last birthday
What is semantic memory?
- memory for understanding concepts, e.g. the capital for France is Paris
