Multi Store Model Flashcards
Who made the multi store model?
Atkinson and Shiffrin
In order what are the parts of the MSM?
Stimulus from environment is taken in by the sensory register which is then transferred into the STM and with prolonged rehearsal is transferred into the LTM.
What is the sensory register?
It takes in stimulus from environment and stores it in one of five stores that are for each sense.
What is STM in the MSM?
Items are usually stored here acoustically, and last for 18 seconds unless transferred into LTM.
How are items transferred into LTM?
Prolonged rehearsal.
How do we recall things from LTM?
Retrieval to the STM.
What research support support is there beginning with B and what is it?
Baddley- acoustically and semantically similar and dissimilar words. When using LTM we mix up semantically similar and when using STM we mix up acoustically similar words. This shows LTM and STM are different stores.
What research support is there that begins with a s and a w? Who is the main focus?
Shallice and Warrington- KF had amnesia, recall was poor when read out loud but when read was good. Shows STM and LTM are separate.
Is prolonged rehearsal needed? Is this a strength or limitation?
No elaborative rehearsal is more important. This is a limitation as it shows MSM has limited explanatory power.
What is elaborative rehearsal?
Linking info to existing knowledge.
Who was HM?
Limitation to MSM. To reduce risk of epilepsy he had his hippocampus removed. This affected his procedural memory but not semantic or episodic.
