multi store model Flashcards
What is the Multi-store model?
who is it by?
It’s an information processing system- passes one unitary store to another in a fixed sequence
By Atkinson and Shiffrin
What are the three stages of the multi store model?
Sensory Register
Short term memory
Long term memory
What is the iconic store?
for visual (THINGS WE SEE)
What is the Echoic store?
For auditory (THINGS WE HEAR)
What is the haptic store?
For tactile (THINGS WE FEEL)
What was Jacob’s technique called?
Digit span technique
How did Jacob’s test the digit span technique?
- Read aloud a list of letters or numbers
- Increased the length until they were getting recall wrong 50% of the time
- Used a wide age range in the study
What were the results of Jacob’s test?
• STM capacity for letters was 7 and 9 for digits
•STM increased with age - 8 year olds recalled 7 whereas 19 year olds recalled 9
• Average digit span was 5-9
What is the capacity, duration, encoding and forgetting for STM
Capacity
- Limited and approx 7 items
Duration
-very limited
Encoding
- Mainly acoustic
Forgetting
-Mainly displacement
What is the capacity, duration, encoding, and forgetting for LTM
Capacity
- unlimited
Duration
- Unlimited (up to a lifetime)
Encoding
- Mainly semantic (by meaning)
Forgetting
-Mainly interference
What did they find in KFs case study?
Short term memory for digits was poor when read out loud (acoustic)
recall much better when able to read himself (visual)
What did further studies show
There could be short term store for non-verbal sounds
What is a limitation of jacob’s study?
It was conducted a long time ago therefore lack temporal validity
Early research shows that some studies lacked adequate control- some participants may have been distracted during the study.
