Multi store model Flashcards

1
Q

who proposed the MSM

A

Atkinson and Shiffrin (1968) proposed the multi-store model, which describes how information flows through the memory system

Q
  1. sensory register
A
  • info enters the SR via senses
  • capacity = unlimited/high
  • duration = less than a second
  • 2 main stores: iconic = visual info coded visually, echoic = auditory info = acoustically

Q
  1. STM
A
  • info we pay attention isn passed to STM
  • capacity = 7+- 2
  • coding = acoustic
  • duration = 18-30 seconds
  • to keep info in STM = maintence rehersal = occurs when we repeat material to ourselves

Q
  1. LTM
A

Prolonged rehearsal if we rehearse it long enough, information transfers from the STM to the LTM
This is the potentially permanent memory store for information that has been rehearsed for a prolonged time
● Duration: potentially up to a lifetime
● Capacity: potentially unlimited
● Coding: tends to be semantic
When we want to recall or want to access information, it has to be transferred back to STM by a process called retrieval
