Multi-organ Dysfunction Syndrome (MODS) Flashcards
1
Q
What is MODS?
A
It is a complication of severe sepsis due to poor perfusion
2
Q
What are clinical manifestations of MODS?q
A
- metabolic acidosis
- loss of function of 2 or more organs
- signs and symptoms of at least 2 organ systems failure
3
Q
What is an example of MODS?
A
Decreased output with an elevated BNP/cool extremities indicate that both the kidneys and heart are failing which are two different organ systems
4
Q
What organs usually fail first due to sepsis?
A
Lungs and kidneys are usually the first two to fail with sepsis
5
Q
What can the nurse see from assessing the heart that patient is experiencing heart failure?
A
Cool extremities, capillary refill >3, and BNP >100
6
Q
What diagnostic labs are pulled to check for pancreas failure?
A
Amylase which is normally 60-160 and lipase which is normally 20-180
