- Theory: A person’s beliefs about pain are associated with various levels of functioning and that changes in a person’s beliefs about pain are associated with changes in functioning
- Efficacy: Shown to decrease difficulties in mood, pain interference, and pain behaviors, and for increasing positive coping and activity levels

- Reduce negative impact of pain on daily life
- Improve physical and emotional functioning through increasing effective coping skills for managing pain
- Reduce pain intensity

Goal of CBT treatment:
A
- Life gets bigger so pain feels smaller by comparison
- Teach patients to expand their lives and react to pain differently; even though pain intensity may stay the same, it feels less overwhelming
