Following the end of the British Empire, the UK Government allowed wide-scale immigration of citizens in the Commonwealth countries to live and work here
What has been the UK’s more recent attitude to immigration?
More recently there has been large-scale immigration to the UK from the countries of Eastern Europe, particularly Poland

Why is Britain a multi-ethnic society?
Britain has always believed in human freedom and so people have come over to escape persecution in their own country, e.g. many Jews came over during WW2 to escape from Hitler’s concentration camps
Britain used to have a huge overseas empire. People in countries which were ruled by Britain were allowed to settle in Britain. Slaves who came to Britain were immediately free.
During WW2, people from the Commonwealth were invited over to Britain to fill up jobs which has been left by the soldiers who had been killed
