A

Journey Times.
A
- Should ø exceed 8hrs unless additional requirements met.
- Unweaned calves, lambs, kids and foals which are still on a milk diet and unweaned piglets must, after 9 hours of travel, be given a rest period of at least one hour sufficient in particular for them to be given liquid and if necessary fed. After this rest period, they may be transported for a further 9 hours.
- Pigs may be transported for a maximum period of 24 hours. During the journey, they must have continuous access to water.
- Domestic equidae may be transported for a maximum period of 24 hours. During the journey they must be given liquid and if necessary fed every eight hours.
- All other animals must, after 14 hours of travel, be given a rest period of at least one hour sufficient for them in particular to be given liquid and if necessary fed. After this rest period, they may be transported for a further 14 hours.

Piglet + sows directive.
A
- Sows and gilts shall be kept in groups during a period starting from 4 weeks after the service to 1 week before the expected time of farrowing.
- Tethering of sows and gilts is prohibited.
- Permanent access to manipulable material.
- Treatment against external and internal parasites, cleaning before placing in farrowing crates.
- Nesting material.
- Tail docking or reduction of corner teeth:
not routinely, only when there is evidence of injuries; tooth clipping: within 7 days of birth. - If practised, the castration of male pigs or tail- docking after 7 days of age: only under anaesthetic and additional prolonged analgesia by a veterinarian.
- Weaning: not less than 4 weeks of age, unless the welfare or health of the dam or piglets would be otherwise adversely affected.

Calves.
A
- Must ø be kept permanently in darkness.
- appropriate diet with sufficient iron (Hb 4.5 mmol/l)
and a minimum of dried feed containing digestible fibre (50-250 g daily: 8-20 weeks of age). - Colostrum: within 6hrs.
- Housing in individual box (max 8 weeks of age) or by tethering in stalls:
> Perforated walls.
> Width: min. 90 cm +/- 10%.
> Exc.: fewer than six calves.

Sus.
A
- Persons: instructions, guidance, training courses.
- Specific provisions for the available unobstructed
floor area. - Daily inspection of essential automatic equipment, immediate rectification of defect, alternative ways of feeding and of maintaining satisfactorily environment.
- Continuous noise level: max. 85 dB; no constant or sudden
noise. - Sus must not be kept permanently in darkness, min 40 lux, min 8 hours.
- Preventing fighting; isolation of pigs showing aggression particularly towards others and the victims of such aggression.
- All Sus >2wks of age must have permanent access to a sufficient quantity of fresh H2O.
- Obtaining suitable materials or objects (such as straw, hay, wood, sawdust, mushroom compost, peat) for proper investigation and manipulation activities.

Contingency Plans.
A
- Each Member State shall draw up a contingency plan applicable to certain diseases specifying the national measures to be implemented in the event of an outbreak of any of the diseases.
- This plan must allow access to facilities, equipment, personnel and other appropriate materials necessary for the rapid and efficient eradication of the outbreak.

Min Criteria for Contingency plans.
A
- The establishment of a crisis center on a national level, which shall coordinate all control measures in the Member State concerned;
- A list shall be provided of local disease control centers with adequate facilities to coordinate the disease control measures at a local level;
- Detailed information shall be given on the staff involved in control measures, their skills and their responsibilities.
- Each local disease control center must be able to contact rapidly persons/organizations which are directly or indirectly involved in an outbreak;
- Equipment and materials shall be available to carry out the disease control measures properly;
- Detailed instructions shall be provided on action to be taken on suspicion and confirmation of infection or contamination, including means of disposal of carcasses;
- Training programs shall be established to maintain and develop skills in field and administrative procedures;
- Diagnostic laboratories must have facilities for post mortem examination, the necessary capacity for serology, histology, etc., and must maintain the skills for rapid diagnosis; arrangements must be made for rapid transportation of samples;
- Details shall be provided of the quantity of vaccine against the disease in question estimated to be required in the event of recourse to emergency vaccination;
- Provisions shall be made to ensure the legal powers necessary for the implementation of the contingency plans.
