MSM of memory Flashcards

1 strength + cp / 2 limitation

1
Q

One strength of the MSM + cp

A

P- research support shown g that stm and ltm are different
E- badly found that we tend to mix up words that sound similar when we are using our STM’s
E- but we mix up words that have similar meanings when we use our ltm
E- further support comes from studies on capacity/duration
T- studies Cleary show that stm and ltm are separate and independent memory stores
CP- in our everyday day lives we form memories on particular things, studies don’t use meaningful materials but use digits, constant syllables
CPT- mom may not be a valid model of how memory works in our everyday lives where we have to remember much more meangingful information

Q

One limitation of the MSM

A

P- evidence of more than one STM store
E- shallice and warrington(1970) studied a client with amnesia, stm for digit was poor when read out loud, however when read to himself recall was much better
E- further studies show that there could be another story-term store for non-verbal sounds
T- MSM is wrong in claiming that there is just one stm store processing different types of information

Q

One limitation of MSM

A

P- prolonged rehearsal is not needed for transfer to ltm
E- craik and walkins(1973) = type of rehearsal is more important than the amount
E- elaborative rehearsal is needed for long term storage(giving it meaning)
E- means that information can be transferred to ltm without prolonged rehearsal
T- MSM does not fully explain how long-term storage is achieved
