Q

How is the data transferred from the sensory register to STM?

A

ATTENTION

If a persons attention is focused on one of the sensory stores (hearing, vision, touch, smell, and taste) then the data is transferred to STM.

Q

What is maintenance rehearsal?

A

Maintenance rehearsal keeps information in STM, but repetition eventually leads to the transfer of the data to LTM.

Q

What is retrieval?

A

Retrieval is the process of making info available for use.

Info must be retrieved from LTM to STM to be used

Info can also be retrieved from STM

Q

How can information leave the STM?

A

It can be displaced (kicked out by new info)

It can decay (if not rehearsed)

It can move to LTM (if rehearsed)

Q

Case study to support MSM

A

HM case study

Had hippocampus surgically removed to reduce his epilepsy.

His personality remained the same, but he could not form any new LTMs, even though he could remember existing ones.

This supports the idea of separate stores of memory, as HM was unable to transfer information from STM to LTM.
