MSK tumors Flashcards
Which cancers leads to mets to the bones?
PbKTL
P-prostate
B-breast
K- Kidney
T- thyroid
L- Lung
Which two cancer mets cause osteoblastic lesions
Breast
prostate
What condition do you see “punched out” lesions on x-ray?
multiple myeloma
Which MSK tumor?
- MC benign bone cyst
- <20
- present w/ pathelogical fx
*
Unicameral bone cyst
(“fluid filled”)
Where are unicameral bone cysts most common?
long bones-
Prox femur and humerus
How do you tx a unicameral bone cyst?
Spontaneously resolves or sx if recurrent fx
sx= aspirate or bone graft
avoid tx if near epiphysis
What is an aneurysmal bone cyst? who is it MC in?
- Benign blood filled cyst
- aggressive lesion found in long bones
- >20y/o
How do most patients with an aneurysmal bone cyst present?
pathologic fx
How do you tx an aneurysmal bone cyst?
Curettage
Electrocautery
Bone graft
Which tumor?
- MC benign tumor in children
- Asx or bain from pathologic fx
*
Non ossifying fibroma
How do you tx a non-ossifying fibroma?
observe w/ serial x-rays
sx if >50% diameter of bone
Which tumor?
- Benign
- MC knee
- Sxs= localized pain and weakness
Giant cell Tumor
Where is a giant cell tumor MC?
knee
What are the s/s of Giant cell tumor
localized pain and weakness
How do you tx a Giant Cell Tumor?
Radiation
How is GIant Cell Tumor diagnosed?
X-ray–> MRI–> bone scan = hot spot
What is the MC benign bone tumor, 10-20 y/o?
Osteochondroma
What is seen on x-ray with an osteochondroma?
Pedunculated
What are the S/s of an osteochondroma?
Abnormal bone growth, incidental finding, growth of tumor causes pain/paresthesia from impingement
How do you tx an osteochondroma?
Observe if ASx w/ x-ray q6mo
if Sx then do MRI prior to excision and biopsy
Which tumor?
- Benign bone tumor
- MC long bones
- S/s= aching pain at night
Osteoid osteoma
What are the S/s of an osteoid osteoma?
aching pain at night
How do you tx an osteoid osteoma? What is definitive tx?
tx= NSAIDs, spontaneously resolves
Definitive tx= radiofrequency ablation
What age is an chondrosarcoma MC?
>40y/o
